Das European Systemic Design Lab entstand aus der kontinuierlichen Zusammenarbeit zwischen drei Institutionen aus Deutschland, Frankreich und Norwegen. Die HTW Berlin, die École de design Nantes Atlantique und  Oslo Metropolitan University führen seit 2021 zahlreiche Aktivitäten gemeinsam durch, deren Höhepunkt dieses Forschungsprojekt ist.

Das Hauptziel besteht darin, eine digitale Plattform für die internationale Zusammenarbeit bei der Lehre von Systemic Design zu entwickeln und zu etablieren. Unter Systemic Design versteht man die Kombination aus System Thinking und Designpraxis mit ganzheitlichen Ansätzen und effektiven Prozessen. Wie die UNESCO 2018 erklärte, ist System Thinking von besonderer Bedeutung und eine Schlüsselkompetenz für „Denken und Handeln zugunsten nachhaltiger Entwicklung“ und darüber hinaus als „Fähigkeit, Beziehungen zu erkennen und zu verstehen, komplexe Systeme zu analysieren, die Art und Weise wahrzunehmen, in der Systeme in verschiedene Bereiche und Maßstäbe eingebettet sind, und mit Unsicherheit umzugehen“.

Somit zielt dieses Projekt darauf ab, eine internationale Bildungsgemeinschaft aufzubauen, die den Schwerpunkt auf kontinuierliche und höhere Bildung legt, indem Systemic Design als wesentliches Instrument zur Lösung komplexer Designprojekte für Nachhaltigkeit implementiert wird. Wir möchten die Erstellung gemeinsamer Lehrpläne und die Erforschung innovativer und digitaler Lehr- und Lernmethoden ermöglichen und Kommunen, Institutionen und Unternehmen in die Lage versetzen, einen systemischen Ansatz zu verfolgen.

Die Einrichtung einer digitalen Plattform soll einen integrativen Raum für Lehre, Peer-to-Pear-Learning und kulturell vielfältige Kooperationsprojekte mit Interessenvertretern aus Industrie, Organisationen und Kommunen schaffen. Sie wird eine Arena für gemeinsam erstellte Lehrmodule sein. Ferner sollte ESDL zu einer deutlichen Steigerung der europäischen Aktivitäten im Bereich des Systemic Design führen. Dies ist wichtig, wenn wir uns Herausforderungen in den Bereichen Klima, Umwelt und Gesellschaft widmen möchten.

Das Projekt wird zu einer bedeutenden, sektorübergreifenden Zusammenarbeit und einem gemeinsamen Lehrplan im Bereich des Systemic Design führen. ESDL wird für Studierende, Alumni, Pädagogen und Interessenvertreter in ganz Europa und darüber hinaus zugänglich sein. Das Projekt wird auch zur weiteren Internationalisierung unserer drei Institutionen beitragen und die Projektergebnisse werden über Konferenzen, Zeitschriften und das European Systemic Design Lab kommuniziert.

The European Systemic Design Lab (ESDL) was born out of the continuous cooperation between three institutions from Germany, France and Norway. HTW Berlin, École de design Nantes Atlantique and  Oslo Metropolitan University  have been engaging in numerous activities since 2021, the culmination of which is this research project,

The principal aim is to develop and establish a digital platform for international cooperation in teaching systemic design that can be defined as the combination of systems thinking and design practice with holistic approaches and effective processes. As stated by UNESCO in 2018, systems thinking is of particular importance and a key competence for "thinking and acting in favour of sustainable development", and further, as “the ability to recognise and understand relationships, to analyse complex systems, to perceive the ways in which systems are embedded within different domains and different scales, and to deal with uncertainty”.

Thus, this project aims to build an international, educational community, emphasising on continuous and higher education, through the implementation of systemic design as an essential tool to resolve complex design projects for sustainability. We seek to enable the creation of joint curriculum and exploration of innovative and digital teaching and learning, as well as to empower municipalities, institutions and businesses to adopt a systemic approach.

The establishment of a digital platform aims to form an inclusive space for teaching, peer learning and culturally diverse cooperative projects with stakeholders from industry, organisations and municipalities. It will be an arena for co-created teaching modules. Furthermore, ESDL should result in a marked increase in European activity in the field of systemic design. This will be important, if we wish to solve pressing environmental and climate related issues.

The project will lead to significant cross sectoral cooperation and a joint curriculum in the field of systemic design. ESDL will be accessible to students, alumni, educators and stakeholders across Europe and beyond. The project will also contribute to further internationalisation of our three institutions and the project results will be communicated through conferences, journals and the European Systemic Design Lab.
